Yesterday my dear friend Alycyn and I participated in our first Color Run, which is a fun and colorful 5k paint race – hence the nickname Happiest 5k on the Planet. We had a great time despite getting paint in our mouths and up our noses, and Dave even came to cheer us on!
The race was in Baltimore, and even though it’s only about a 45 minute drive, we decided to make it a girls trip and spend Saturday evening at the Inner Harbor. Neither of us had spent any time in Baltimore, and thought it would be a good excuse. We set out on Saturday afternoon and hit up Chaps Pit Beef, which was featured on several foodie shows. We each got a different sub with multiple meats and sides of green beans and mac’n’cheese – delish! We tested the many bbq sauces and really liked the two house sauces the best.
Once we made it to our hotel, we strolled around the Inner Harbor shops and then went to pick up our race packets. Seeing all the colors and crazy outfits at the check-in got us pumped up! We decided that we needed more props and made a quick trip to Forever 21.
Afterwards we stopped at a bar for a glass of wine and quickly agreed that it was so bad we couldn’t finish. We sipped a bit and then made a beeline for the Morton’s in our hotel, where we were served much better wine and promptly took our glasses to our room so that we could just relax. We eventually ordered room service and went to sleep. It was a perfect night by my standards!
The next morning we dressed in our white shirts, temporary tattoos, colorful socks and white color runner sweat bands. We were ready and so excited! The course was just a couple blocks away, and we got there with plenty of time to take pictures and enjoy the fun atmosphere.
Dave drove up that morning from DC to cheer us on. He greeted us after the first color station, which was yellow, and then surprised us at the last color station, which was blue. After each kilometer, runners go through a color station where people spray you down with that particular color. We went through yellow, orange, purple, green and blue. Some were crazier than others! Dave snapped the picture below and I’m pretty sure we were still trying to clear our eyes and mouths of the blue paint!
This was my first race and I am not a big runner, so it was nice to have the encouragement along the way! My first goal was to run the entire time and then the second goal was to finish in around 30 minutes, even though the race is not officially timed. (We did both!) Alycyn was the best cheerleader/running partner I could have asked for!
After the race we cleaned up at our hotel, which was surprisingly easier than expected, and then went to grab lunch at Dempsey’s in Camden Yards. Naturally we ordered maple bacon on a stick and flights of their in-house beers.
All in all it was a great weekend with a wonderful friend, and a much-needed break from the many boxes that are still taking over our house :)
