One of our favorite summer activities is going to watch any of the local minor league baseball teams. The atmosphere is more laid back than the majors, and the beer is cheaper! :)
Last weekend we went to the Potomac Nationals game with out friends Matt and Kelly. Saturday nights at the ballpark are usually my favorite because of the fireworks at the end, but this evening was particularly difficult to enjoy due to the heat. I was fairly miserable until the sun went down and then I could finally enjoy the game. P-Nats won! Then the fireworks began, and they did not disappoint. (I would almost argue that they were better than the Fourth of July fireworks!)
Tuesday we went to the Washington Nationals baseball game with a group of NPF folks though, and I have to say it was one of the coolest experiences I’ve had at a sporting event. Our friend Angie set us up with a field visit for batting practice. We loitered along the sidelines (Is that what they’re called in baseball?) talking to other fans and watching the players warm up. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here are mine from the night.
We stared at this ball for a good amount of time talking to the fans standing next to us. A girl about our age was bound and determined to get the ball, but the security guard had his eye on us and repeatedly warned not to “touch his grass.” I saw her later though, and she had the ball!
After a while we headed up to the club level – even though our seats would not have allowed us access, our field wristbands did!
A few of us girls stayed in the bar area just chatting and catching up. Once we finally made our way towards the seats, I was starving! We walked the concessions and I settled on a veggie quesadilla at the taqueria. It was honestly about five bites, and I finished it before we even made it back to our section!
Naturally I decided to get a hot dog to round off my dinner, and later found out it was National Hot Dog day so I felt pretty good about that decision.
I honestly don’t know a lot about baseball and it probably ranks last on my list of entertaining sports. (Being from Texas, football is obviously my favorite.) Never do I watch baseball on tv, but I do like the atmosphere of going to the game – mostly for the food and beer. The Nats lost that night, but it was nice to spend time with old friends, enjoying the ballpark snacks, and we even got some cool schwag!!
